5 Simple Rug Cleaning Tips

Experts say you should clean your rugs about once a year. Regular cleanings are essential, especially if you or anyone in your home suffers from allergies. A lot of dirt and dust builds up in your rugs over time, and vacuuming is not enough to get rid of it.

When is the last time you cleaned the rugs in your home? If you can’t remember, it might be time to spruce them up!

If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to rug cleaning, don’t worry. Here are our top five simple tips to make your rugs look brand new!

Use the Right Materials

Using professional cleaning products will make all the difference in getting your rugs really clean. In addition to high-quality rug shampoo, you’ll need some other rug cleaning tools, including:

  • A vacuum
  • A bucket
  • A sponge
  • A soft-bristled brush
  • A squeegee
  • A hose

Prep Your Rug

You wouldn’t mop your kitchen floor without sweeping it, right? Well, the same concept applies to rug cleaning. Before you start washing your rug, you need to vacuum it thoroughly.

If you have pets, you’ll probably need to use a stiff brush to brush out any pet hair left behind by the vacuum. Brush in the direction of the rug’s pile (visible surface) to get rid of any excess hair before you start washing it.

Test Your Cleaning Products

How awful would it be if you poured shampoo all over your rug and ended up accidentally bleaching it? Some cleaning solutions can make the colors of your rug bleed together. Yikes!

To avoid this, be sure to carefully read and follow the mixing instructions listed on the back of your rug shampoo bottle. Use warm water to clean your rug, as hot water can shrink fibers or lead to color fading.

Once your solution is mixed, test it on a small corner of the rug. If the colors don’t run or fade, you can proceed and start cleaning your rug.

Wash and Rinse Thoroughly

Using your sponge or brush, work a lather of shampoo deep into the rug. Let the solution sit for several minutes. Then, rinse the rug with your hose until the water is clear of suds.

Remove excess water with a squeegee, working in the direction of the rug’s nap. Once all the water is out, lay the rug flat to dry. Flip it over once the top side is dry.

Loosen the Rug’s Fibers

Your rug’s fibers may become compacted during the washing and drying process. To return it to its original look, use a vacuum or soft-bristled brush to loosen the rug’s fibers before returning it to the room.
